Ps4 pro supersampling performance issues

Please add an option for players with ps4 pro who play on a 1080p display to turn off supersampling. The game runsure well 95% of the time but when there's a lot going on the frame rate dips belown 20 fps. Two examples of this are when placing hellfire napalm, or against bugs when the tenticle creature uses its tenticles, the game becomes extremely choppy and the game looks muddy. I recently bought a ps4 pro and it's running worse that my original ps4 did! Please add an option to disable supersampling.

No other game that I own underperforms like this. I've resorted to changing my ps4 settings to 720 just so the game can run smoothly. Please patch this.

I've not played the game in a wee while so I must have missed some freaky DLC.

Anyway, how does the game look on the Pro? Aside from those issues.

  • I play on 1080 display. Its got a muddy/blendy look to the graphics. I wouldn't mind it if the performance would keep up. But the loss in frames is not worth the improvement

Sounds like what happens on PC when playing Helldivers on a laptop (sensitive to gettting framerate drops when Hellfire is used).

It is a little strange to read that the stronger PS4 Pro is underperforming while on PC it is the weaker gaming machines that suffer performance issues. Thanks for coming here to report the issue. I will eventually be getting a 4k PS4 (whatever they do after the current Pro), so it would be good if my favorite game for PS4 is sorted out before I do :robotembarrassed:

  • Glad to see people are reading the forums. I hope the message gets to Arrowhead developers. I looked up this supersampling issue. It has happened in other games aswell like Shadow of Mordor and The Last of Us: Remastered. Both of those games were fixed by adding an options for 1080p displays. You can choose between better graphics (Supersampling) or better performance (standard 1080p display). Arrowhead developers, can you please patch this?

The Arrowhead people are pretty good about monitoring the threads and especially the Support Thread because they are subscribed to that and get notification emails while a new post like the one you made would only cross their eyes when they do their routine look and see on other posts / discussions.

  • Yup, we've seen it and noted the request :)

  • Awesome, thank you guys and gals at Arrowhead for the feedback. Hope it gets patched soon.

Edit: Whoops, I meant to say TENTICLES!!!

  • Hey ForeverAPeon, It's been 3 months since the game was patched, and the framerate issue on PS4 Pros is still ongoing. Other games that had similar issues were patched with an option to select standard 1080p (no resolution upscaling) for better performance.

Is this problem being worked on? If yes, do you have a timeframe of when it will be fixed?

    0
  • I don't have any updates for you regarding this and no timeframe :( It depends on our studio's resources and when/where they can be allocated. I can poke the devs again to see if I can get a confirmed answer on whether it will be worked on.

  • Please do that. I bought a pro so I can play a games with higher performance and better framerate, which was also promised by sony. I've been disappointed with how this game runs on the new console, and starting to regret trading in my old ps4 and getting a pro. I realize Arrowhead does not have the personnel of a AAA studio but it's been 3 months since the last update and it was brought up on other forums and gaming news sites. Not all were for this game specifically but other gaming studios offered solutions like adding an option to set the resolution back to standard 1080p which fixed this issue.

I'm not a game developer but adding a standard 1080p resolution setting in the options doesn't seem like a very difficult thing to implement. I don't think this is something that should be put on the backburner. It's a serious performance issue on the ps4 pro and should be patched.

  • I spoke with some people today and this is something we will take a look into, but if we were to put it in a patch it most likely won't be for a long while.

How long is long while? Like a month or a few months or a year? I don't want to upgrade to PS4 Pro until I know Helldivers which is my favorite game on the PS4 continues to run optimally.

Edit: In related news, Rocket League will be officially getting PS4 Pro support February 21st. I hope whenever such support comes to Helldivers, there is a PS Blog article about it too.

  •  Please don't quote me on this as times can vary greatly due to patch times and resources here, but my best guess would be 2/3 months. We patch bugs that pop up, but we normally have to wait until we get quite a few gathered and fixed, as it is not possible to patch for every single small thing every week. My guess would be that we would most likely put out another patch within 9 months. Again don't hold me to this!

    Thanks for that reference link

So I don't really understand what the issue is with Helldivers on PS4 Pro because it is still 60fps and using checker-boarding technique to make to produce 4k resolution screen. Is the issue mainly with using Helldivers on PS4 Pro when not using a 4k UHDTV?

I am still on a launch PS4 so this doesn't affect me yet, but I do plan to get a 4K UHDTV with HDR (hopefully an OLED) and at that time I will be looking to upgrade the PS4 to the Scorpio equivalent.

  • It's 60 fps but only with limited enemies on screen. Once the battle gets really hectic, you have to make split second decisions with the game running choppy. losing a couple of frames is the difference between life and death in this game.  It's frustrating. It's even more frustrating that I spent all this money on the pro for a poorer experience on one of my favourite games and the current solution to this can be summed up by "it MIGHT be fixed some time far in the future."

Ouch. Well, glad that you are pressing for a solution then.

Since it is a Sony Published game and game seems to be in low-cost maintenance / support mode, I think Arrowhead can't commit but based on their history I do have reasonable expectation that they will eventually fix it. It is nice that they have at least acknowledged even if they aren't able to give it immediate / urgent attention. I mean at least they are being upfront that they are putting issue on their to-do list, but don't expect a patch in near term.

Yeah, I'm trying to find a solution to this. I called the sony playstation technical support line the other night but they just gave me the standard run around. I told them what the problem is and they said they will take my compaint into consideration. I asked the lady what they had written down as my complaint, and she just gave me some standard answer like, "we will take your complaints and those of others for future patches." No details or time frames. So I'll take that as a complete waste of time.

Look if your problem is already on the PS Share Blog where people get to put in problems / suggestions / ideas, and others get to vote up / down those things. If you find the issue there, add your vote, and if not submit the topic. Then try to drive more people there to vote for issue to get looked at.

It is one of the mechanisms by which PlayStation initiatives get prioritized. You can also try getting into the beta next time they are looking for more participants for PS4 firmware updates (current window to sign up might already be closed). Once in, you have access to private beta forums (within the PS Community forums) where you can report problems like you have found with Helldivers and report it as a defect (or as on-going defect).

Sadly it is not. I got a ps4 pro and 4K UHDTV television and still have that muddied look for helldivers. I was greatly disappointed and still am as Helldivers is an excellent game. Now its just really annoying and I havent played Helldivers since

Helldivers was the first game I tried after getting my new PS4 pro and 4K UHDTV.  ITs the only one out of all the ps4 pro capatable games I have that seem to of gotten worse. I searched for weeks for some kind of solution but havent found anything that I could do on my end. If anyone comes up with something please let me know

This might even be a completely different issue but I will upload a video shortly showing you what I mean

    Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS7AIZKXt8U

Here is the video, the studdering when sprinting is much worse on ps4 pro on my 4k television then my normal ps4.

Has the option to turn Boost Mode on / off in PS4 Firmware Update 4.5 helped your issue with Helldivers on PS4 Pro?

So I've tried Helldivers on PS4 Pro and overall it's an excellent experience paired with a 4K tv. Resolution is noticeably sharper.

Only had one isolated weird incident in which multiple rectangular black boxes appeared overlayed on top of the Super Earth Victory screen (where the ship fleet is parked outside Super Earth).

Otherwise it's been a great experience.

I have the same thing on the PS4 Pro. Also on the loading screen while entering the mission the player names on other ships are displayed with such a small font that they are a bit hard to read. Other than those it's perfect and those two minor things don't affect the gameplay at all.

Not sure if the PS4 Pro small font is an issue only on 1080p screens. On a 4K screen the resolution makes it easy to read the font.
