How to hook up a PS4 to a projector

I would like to buy a PS4 and I was wondering how I would hook it up with a projector. Right now I have projector that's not HD and I use the white, yellow and red cables for video and audio. I use an old TV for the sound. My setup is here.

If I bought an HD projector, could I still use my TV for the sound, or do I have to buy a sound system? And if I did, how would I hook up the PS4 to a sound system?

    Welcome to the Playstation Forums.

It sounds to me like it is time for you to do some upgrading.

A modern AV (Audio & Video)  Receiver will have HDMI in and outputs, likewise an HD protector will have an HDMI input as well.

Then you run HDMI from the PS4 to the receiver, HDMI to the projector and then hook up whatever combination of speakers you want.

The nice thing about stepping up to an AV receiver is that you can hookup multiple items at the same time. In my case, PS3, PS4 and an MP3 player and have them all work with no cable fumbling.

Also, you can start with just a couple speakers and work your way up to full 5.1/7.1 audio depending on what receiver you choose.

You certainly would be able to run your TV as the speakers with this setup as well, but other than budgetary restrictions, why would you?

    Hope that helps.

  • if you want to keep the same setup then after getting an hd projector go to amazon and search for hdmi audio tap. it will be a small box that hdmi cables pass through. the box will allow for RCA cables to be used with the older tv for sound.

Thanks guys, I think I'll buy an AV Receiver, and use that with the HD projector.

  • What issue are you having with it? No video or sound?

  • No video and no sound for the moment. When i connect them and hold the power button for 7 seconds, is see the screen with safe mode on the projector. But when it reaches 100%, the projector shows 'no signal' again and the signal doesn't return.

  • Try hooking the ps4 to a regular tv and set the output to 720. I saw that the projector is 720 so when the ps4 starts in normal mode it may be set to statically set to 1080p

  • i tried it. It doesn't work. Also 480p doesn't work.

  • If you can see a display in safe mode then 480p is working. Try selecting option 2 which will set the ps4 to 480p in normal mode. If the display shows up change the display setting to 720p from the settings. This should get the hdmi handshaking to work the next time the system is turned on

  • just use headphones. the playsation 4 has an option, when holding the ps button, and selecting adjust devices, you can transfer all audio to a headset plugged into the control pad. it may not be ideal for enjoying your ps4 on a projector with friends, but it is a good temporary solution until you can sort it out.

  • unfortunatly the playstation 4 can only be connected with hdmi due to lack of other ports ...but then 1080p res isnt going to be achievable any other way

it would be best to get modern display dpi projector ( graphics look nice ) the way to connect an external sound system is via optical in on the back of ps4 /ps3 they both have this feature and most modern sound systems will support  this

Projecters suck old tech and were not designed for gaming just because you have bigger tv don't make you any cooler

  • Hey Maarten4 - did you ever come right with connecting the ps4 to the projector? I have a pocket projector that has really great quality and I use it for almost everything, but I cannot seem to get a display once I connect my new ps4. I managed to see a display last night (I had the ps4 connected temporarily to a small monitor to complete set up), when I selected to start the game, but I would like to be abe to display the home screen through the projector from the moment I turn it on. I travel a lot and dont always have a tv nearby to navigate through the home page.
