Update 7 just bricked my console

Dont get it!

  • No, it didn't. Every time there's an update a few people have problems of one sort or another at the same time and they immediately blame them on the update. As always, I ask if the update were the problem then why doesn't it affect every Playstation? Or even every Playstation of the same model/manufacturing batch? There have been over 100 million PS4s sold (including slim and Pro models). Of course some people will have issues at the same time as an update. Did they (supposedly) have problems with the last update? Probably not. Look for a different issue, such as a corrupted hard drive.

Sure, right.  Your console likely already had an issue.  Your situation doesn't necessarily apply to the millions of other consoles that updated perfectly.

See if it will boot into safe mode.

If it will not you can contact Sony for repair. Depending on in/out of warranty their may be a charge.

  • Every time there's an update the screaming starts; "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!! UPDATE X.XX BRICKED MY SYSTEM!!! PONZI SCHEME!! BAIT AND SWITCH!!! I'LL INFORM THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE NO REAL POWER, AND ABUSE THE ALREADY BACKLOGGED COURT SYSTEM TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!".

Same here, I was at work when it auto updated.  I came home and turned on my ps4 only to find it booting in safe mode with a message.  Cannot start the ps4.  Connect the DUALSHOCK 4 using the USB cable, and then press the PS button.Upon doin that I get the message Connect a USB storage device that contains an update file for reinstallation for version 6.72 or later.  I have done that with both a 6.72 file as well as the new 7.0 and once it downloads and reboots it goes right back to the Cannot start the ps4.  Im stuck in a loop.  Is anyone else haveing this problem?

    Hi redpat,

Update 7.00 doesn't inherently brick consoles, however the general process of updating system firmware is always a sensitive one. Interruptions or errors in the process can result in corruptuion of the system software.

Try unplugging the PS4 for 5 minutes, plug it back in wait another 5 minute, then try booting it back up. Does it boot up normally? If not, can you boot the PS4 in Safe Mode?

  • My PRO was not bricked, however the web browing has been negatively affected since installing 7.00.

Sites now load slower, changing pages is slower, scrolling is slower and stutters. Also image enlargement now needs reset with page changes.

So i plug in my old regular PS4 without 7.00 and browsing is like my PRO was before 7.00.

My old regular is at 6.02 so it does have the temporary blur when changing windows that 6.02 introduced and later fixed with an update.

Both my PRO and regular PS4 got the 6.02 blur. I updated my PRO but not the regular.

Yes, i did a database rebuild on my PRO. The fix is a patch like what fixed the 6.02 blur.

Browsing on my older regular PS4 at 6.02 is faster and smoother. Like my PRO was prior to installing 7.00

Both my PRO and regular PS4 had the same blur with 6.02 . My PRO was updated , the regular was not.

My old PS4 with 6.02 does have the temporary blur when changing open windows. My PRO was equally affected by that blur that 6.02 introduced and later fixed with a future update. I updated my PRO but not the old unit.

Until a fix comes i will game on my PRO and browse on my old regular.

  • w2056    Still no. You probably have a corrupted hard drive. Try some of the means in your settings to fix this issue.

Downloaded the update, and it installed fine, but yes, there's bound to be major & minor problems here and there, such as trying to download a game patch, or going to PS Store, or both, or something, and it all leads to the safe mode loop each time. New big updates do tend to have problems that slipped through the cracks time and again to some people. Different matters, such as the corrupted Hard Drive, that other people presume, aren't related to the updates. When people fix the safe mode loop, everything works like normal, even the Hard Drive itself.

Those are always controversial, but those problems should be reported so Sony can place in new patches that increase stability. I would like 7.01 to come out very soon.

  • ioanina   There's nothing wrong with the update or it would affect all consoles. There are problems with people's consoles that are discovered at the time of an update.

  • Same here my new and old Ps4 consoles are doing the same thing.I update in safe mode with a usb and it works fine for 20 minutes then back to crashing and the safe mode loop. I called Sony and was told" We know of the issue and it will cost 99 dollars to fix it". This sounds like a scam. BTW one is a pro ps4 and the other is a older model. it also deleted all my save files and games so each time i reinstall the 7.00 update from safe mode and try reinstalling my games it crash and starts back in the loop.

  • I thought the forum was to help people with issues not ***** at them for not having the same success as them in updating their console.

Since the update my PS4 continuously boots to a "cannot start the PS4". It won't read any of my usb drives LIKE IT DID PRIOR to the update.  I'm unable to get to the start menu...so my console is usless.

Worked great prior to update. My guess is the UPDATE is a contributing factor.

  • You are the unfortunate recipient of a sad coincidence.

  • Sony answer was replace your hard drive.I replaced mine and everything works. Sony wanted 99 dollars to do it but i just spent very little for a faster hard drive and did it myself now all is fixed.

  • It's a hard drive issues with the 7.00 update. If your ps4 is using a HGST hard drive with 5400 rpm then you will have a issue with the 7.00 update.I suggest ditching the hard drive and replacing it with a faster one. Sony want 100 dollars to do it but you can do it yourself for 25 bucks.

  • Wow, you guys are complete ******. Not everyone had a smooth and successful update, and you're blaming the users, when clearly the problem lies in the update itself? Now this whole BS about the slow drive makes no sense. I have a first gen PS4, updated no problem. My friend has a NEWER PS4 slim, and it's pretty much briked. If it's the "Slow hard drive" Then I dare y'all to explain that? I'm gonna try wiping his drive, and re-installing the update from scratch, see if that helps. I thought the forums were a place to seek help, not get ridiculed for having bad luck! WTF people?

@VioletWinds Well, it truly annoys so many people. The outcome really differs.

To everyone else, if you're still having problems when some solutions trying to fix whatever problems you have didn't work, please send in your problem reports to Sony so they can fix them in a more stable update. And, if you keep having crashes, try this to get out of your endless loop. Works every time.

    1. Unplug PS4 and leave it for 1 minute.

    2. Plug PS4 back in.

    3. Press Power button on console and hold it for about 7 seconds until you hear it beep once again. (practice if needed)

    4. Have a DualShock 4 with a USB Mini placed in, then press PS Button.

    5. Wait exactly 10 minutes without pressing anything. (highly needed)

    6. Select option #4, "Restore Default Settings".

    7. Select "Yes".

Boom. Done. Your PS4's up and running once more, and nothing gets erased. Only re-do whatever settings you've done again.
