Fire TV 4k (2nd Gen) stuttering video after 6.2.3 update

I have an Amazon Fire TV 4k (2nd gen) and updated the PS Vue app to 6.2.3 yesterday.  Following this update, I have found that 60 fps video now exhibits an intermittent stuttering and appears to be very choppy.  This behavior is especially obvious while watching sports or programming with a scrolling ticker along the bottom of the screen.  I have restarted the device and checked all obvious issues on my side.  I have 1 Gbps internet service with a very strong 5 GHz wireless signal and no problems with other apps.

Coincidentally, I have two Sony Bravia TVs with Android TV that began exhibiting this same behavior a few months ago (likely April) following a Vue app update.  They both still exhibit this behavior, making sports essentially unwatchable.  It appears that the PS Vue team is rolling out an update that is gradually introducing severe video stuttering across all devices.

I also have an Nvidia Shield TV and Roku Ultra that do not exhibit this behavior as of yet.  Unfortunately, 3 out of my 5 PS Vue enabled devices are now nearly unwatchable.

  • I have reached out to @AskPlayStation on Twitter on more than one occassion regarding this issue...I have yet to receive a response of any kind...

This is VERY disappointing...I would think, at the least Playstion Vue could rollback to the earlier version until the kinks get worked out...The stuttering video makes for an unpleasant experience!

I am seeing this issue on both my Fire TV Stick 4k as well as my Fire TV 2nd Gen Box.

    Please remedy this issue pronto!

  • I'm seeing the exact same issue on my Fire Stick 4k.  I also went back and hooked up my Amazon Fire TV 1st gen.  The Vue app updated to 6.2.3.  Same stuttering issues across all channels.  Sports and racing are unwatchable.

Edit to add:  I cleared data and cache.  I also uninstall the app and then reinstalled Vue.  Same issues.

  • Seeing this on my 2nd gen Fire tv while watching Star wars on Tbs just now. It doesn't seem to be doing it on the commercials. Its enough to be annoying but not enough to make it unwatchable for me. Didn't really notice it watching Bein Sports this morning, but thought I was seeing it watching the formula 1.  Seems more noticable during Star Wars though.

  • So how does one roll back the version on a firestick?

I have a firestick with 5.10.0 that works just fine.

6.2.3 on another firestick does not.

Vue 5.10.0 apk's are on the internet (meaning the older version is out in the wild on the internet).  I just don't know how to get the .apk file location so it can be loaded with the downloader app.

  • Unfortunately, same issue is happening on my firestick devices. Still working well on Roku which is saving the day, but not ideal due to the limited interface.  I've tried all I can think of on the firestick including a full device reset to no avail. If anyone has a workaround, please let us know. Thanks.

  • Same issue here.  Monday it started.  There's no way to uninstall and get the old version of the app either.  Live sports are unwatchable.

  • I contacted support and they said they are aware of the issue and working on a solution.  No timeframe was given.  I told them the solution should be simple; revert to the older version (or push those bytes as an "update".)  They said they may end up doing that, but again gave no timeframe.  This is inexcusable.  The faulty version should have been reverted within hours of discovering the problem.

I will add Sony Bravia TVs with Android TV moving forward. I had to join the Facebook Group for Vue, as strangely it is private. I also reported in Twitter @AskPlayStation and sent a DM. I pasted in this thread in all my posts. So far, Crickets for a responce. When I get a responce, I will post it here.

" I am going to post on PS Vue Facebook group now. "

Would you mind including Sony Bravia TVs with Android TV in your message?  They have the same stuttering issue as well.

I have the same issue on Fire Stick 4K. So are a lot of other people reporting it. https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/playstation-vues-recent-update-breaks-support-for-some-amazon-fire-tv-models/

Can someone from Sony acknowledge the issue and give an ETA on a fix? If this persists I will be leaving Vue for another serive. Poor QA. I am going to post on PS Vue Facebook group now.

It's unfortunate that the moderators disappear once we provide the necessary information.

Hopefully, it will be fixed soon, but I am not confident, as this problem has existed on Android TV devices for roughly three months.

  • I broke out the old chromecast until it’s fixed on the fire tv.  Not ideal but it works for now.

"Could it be that this newest "update" inadvertently is using Flash again as the video packager?"

It's impossible to say, but it does seem like a portion of the code base is shared across platforms and this problem is progressively becoming more widespread.  As I posted previously, I first noticed this problem a few months ago on Android TV-based Sony Bravia TVs.  It seems that the Vue engineering team is likely unaware of the problem or is unable to fix it.  I have had Vue for roughly 2.5 years and have been happy with it overall and it is a shame that they are gradually releasing updates that are breaking the service for a significant portion of users.

  • Same exact thing happened a month,or 2, ago. I uninstalled and got version 5.1 when I redownloaded vue. Worked great until today, when the update was forced on me. Tried to install 5.1 again and was forced to update to the newest version...Guess I'll have to dust off the old Roku Ultra, if they don't fix this problem. It makes it unwatchable.

  • After reading through some of the reports, it strikes me that this is EXACTLY the same problem that was plaguing their browser interface for years. At the time, most believed it was a problem with their implementation of Flash. At one point, shortly before I left the service (early in 18, I believe), the problem went away in the browser, and I believe the theory was that PS Vue had switched away from Flash in favor of HTML 5.

Could it be that this newest "update" inadvertently is using Flash again as the video packager?

  • Same thing happened to me on my fire tv 2nd generation. Video studdering since the update last night.  Odd though that my 3rd generation fire tv doesn’t have the video studdering issue after the update.

The stuttering persists across all channels and all types of programming.  I have read the video quality FAQ and none of the issues apply to me.  Buffering is almost instantaneous and the app shows 5 connection bars at all times.

Recent app updates have introduced this issue on both Fire TV and Sony Android TVs (A9G and X930E).  I have been happy with PS Vue for more than two years until now, but I'm sad to say the service is getting worse as the price is increasing.

  • I have this same issue as well on my Fire Stick 4k. Seems to stutter on every channel. Before the 6.2.3 update it was fine, now it stutters (not buffering, but the picture actually sturrers). I've force quit, cleared the cache, and reinstalled the PSVUE app. Does it on all four of my Fire Sticks that got the update. Two of them are wireless and two are hard wired. When I watch it on the mobile app or on my pc (using the same internet connection as the fire sticks) they do not have the stutter issue.

  • Here to help! This article here contains useful information for troubleshooting various video quality issues. Regarding that stuttering, is the issue persisting across all of your programming, or just a select few channels/programs in particular?
