PlayStation Vue DVR that isn't ... (can't skip commercials, etc)

How badly I wanted to drop DirecTv for PlayStation Vue. But after spending the weekend trying to get the online Vue DVR to skip through some of the most painful commericals (lawsuit ad for talc power, ad for knee brace if you have Medicare, etc) which you get to see four or more time individually through a 50 minute show (Animal Planet channel). I finally couldn't put me nor my family through another one of these and we quit. A little bit of irony but we do watch commecials even with a functional skip feature (when the ad catches our eye) -- but not when they're this painful. SIMPLY NOT WORTH THE SAVINGS or the waste of three minutes of pain.

As someone else said in these forum's -- typical SONY, close but when it comes to usability for the consumer, just like the UMB disc, a show stopper.

I think we'll try Sling next ...

  • I was going to ask if you were watching something that was On Demand, but you stated that you were wtaching Animal Planet...so nevermind.

I know that you can't forward through live shows, but you can't do that on any platform. I have not had any issues with forwarding through a show that I have recorded and am watching later.

I've fast forwarded through plenty of DVR'd content on ANIMAL PLANET as well as MANY other channels, what it sounds like is you are BRAND NEW to the platform and think that just because you added a show to your favorites that it instantly would make all available content DVR, it does NOT, anything that aired BEFORE you added it to your favorites is CATCHUP, not DVR, CATCHUP cannot be fast forwarded through, DVR CAN. oh and if you think this is Bad, the ONLY content on Sling you can skip forward during is if you start over a program while it's still in its airing time slot, as soon as the normal airing time ends you are left unable to fast forward and thats only on the handful of channels the even allow it.

  • What I see, a lot, is that many complain and then say they're quitting or what not without even asking for help. Trying to find out how it works, asking for advice and what they need to do.

Have a little patience and troubleshoot.

  • Yeah, you should probably verify you are watching content that you saved to "My Shows" (it will have a little icon in the far left corner that says "DVR" because I have never had any issues on any channel for a show that I have DVR'ed. It also skips in 10 second increments on my Fire TV (if you press the right of the circle buttion as opposed to the FFWD button). I haven't found any content you can do this with if it's On Demand though. Sometimes it's hard to tell if you don't know what to look for to verify it is DVR vs. On Demand.

  • I'm fairly new to this service but have noticed that the DVR function does not begin until the live show has completed and you can't fast forward comercials.  This is on PC browser on Chrome.  The service may behave differently on Playstation or on Roku or even on a different browser.

You can use the START OVER button (I believe the PC version has this), if the program is something you have set as a "My Show" at which point you WILL be able to fast forward up to LIVE (on devices that support fast forwarding, I can't remeber if there was anyway to do that on PC, of course obviously you can't go past LIVE), the caveat to that is if a program finishes airing before you catch up to live then the ability to fast forward stops working and you need to switch over to something else for just a second then switch back and that will restore the ability to fast forward.

Also, just a side note, do yourself a favor and get a Fire TV 4k box, the Web interface SUCKS and is a lower quality image compared to the Fire TV 4k box.

    1) Looks at the DATE before replying to the Original Poster

    2) Why haven't you been able to FF through DVR? It should work unless you are using like a PC to watch

    3) I regularly "skipped" forward on Sling when I had it, the trick was it had to be on a channel that had the 3 day rewind (that was a TRUE 3 day rewind, not the ONLY NEW crap DTVN is pulling) and had to be a show that was still airing, you could "start over" the episode on those channels and have FF capability until you either caught back up to Live TV or the time slot ended, at which point the FF was disabled.

all that said I don't understand why the guy is complaining about the commercial content to Sony, it's NOT like Sony controls the commercials that Animal Planet airs.

  • On Roku, for the shows I watch you cannot FF until like a minute after the original program's live airing is completed. And it has to be in My Favorites. If you find the show in on demand it's not going to work like a full feature DVR.

  • As stated by some key for FF the show needs to be added to favorites list or FF is disabled on many channels.  Some doesn't matter you can FF all the time If not live but most programming I watch has to be included as favorites show. So its basically functioning like a DVR.

  • I think you've caught a new bug.

I've been using PS VUE for 3 months. I noticed yesterday that fast forward was not working for DVR'd shows. The fast forward starts but immediately goes to pause.

The behavior is still happening today.

This problem has nothing to do with your understanding of how DVR is supposed to work. It's a real problem.

BTW, this is happening for me on both the latest generation Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Firestick.

I also noticed yesterday other strange new problems happening with DVR'd shows. Maybe changes have been made to the DVR software that haven't been fully checked out.

    ----UPDATE---

Upon further testing I discovered that this FF problem was only occuring with Fox News shows that I recorded yesterday. It's not happening with recordings I made from other channels yesterday. A Fox News program that I recorded this morning doesn't have the FF problem.

Thanks for your cogent answer on this topic to the OP. He may be gone but I'm sure newbies, like myself, found your post very helpful.

I'm new to the service, and I'm finding the opposite of most here.  I can't rewind a DVR show?  I'm able to FF, but sometimes go to far and want to backup a few seconds.  Vue could really use 30 sec forward, 10 sec back functions.

WHAT DEVICE are you using, Fire TV, Android TV, Android, iOS and Apple TV (so i've been told on the Apple TV) all have 10 second forward and back buttons, I only had the Roku for a few days before I left this service (due to channel removals that made it no longer a Viable option for me), but I think I remeber some skipping but it wasn't nearly as controlled. it's only the consoles and web interface that lack the skip feature.

  • Good luck with Sling. It only has half of the local channels. You can skip they DVR'd content, but not VOD or as PlayStation calls it (catch up). They will work out the kinks. I love it !

  • Dude WHY did you bump a thread to reply to a post from a YEAR AND A HALF AGO? this thread hasn't been posting in since MARCH and you bump it to say something to the ORIGINAL GUY.

  • I can fast forward through some shows and not others.  Last week on Tuesday (9/26) night we DVR'd NCIS and Bull back-to-back.  Last night (10/5) we watched NCIS and could FF.  We watched Bull and could not FF.  Both were recorded on the same night, on the same network and channel and both were watched from My Shows.  I'm willing to learn if I am doing something wrong, but what could be the difference?

  • On the Xfinity X1 there was a secret trick with the remote. You pressed a certain combinaton of buttons, and it made "Page Up" into a 30 second skip.

This 30 second skip worked on ALL CONTENT. Even the "prohibited shows".

I just rewound too much, now I have to watch show that I already friggin saw, because of an artificial restriction.
